Dottie Jordan Park Tree & Pollinator Festival Day

Join your neighbors in welcoming several newly planted trees to Dottie Jordan Park! There will be a tree planting demonstration from the COA's Urban Forestry Department, as well as a FREE tree giveaway from TreeFolks. Lots of local organizations will be on hand with fun activities for the kids, including Kids Climb, Art Activities, and Seed Ball Making. Tour the community garden, find out where the birds live, and so much more!

Park Party at the Pleasant Hill Branch Library

Join us at Pleasant Hill for a special Roots & Wings-themed Park Party and celebration of the natural world in our library's beautiful green space. Learn about the plants in our park and enjoy a nature-themed story walk around the grounds. Youth Librarian Jace will host an outdoor storytime for all ages, followed by butterfly- and plant-themed crafts, activities, a chalk mural, and games. Free refreshments will be provided along with a seed ball creation station.

Concordia University Texas presents Native Planting Event for Pollinators

Join Concordia University’s Office of Environmental Stewardship for an environmental stewardship service event! Attendees will be outside planting trees and Texas native plants to attract pollinators. Participate, discover, and learn the importance of creating sustainable habitats for butterflies and other pollinators. There will be opportunity to plant Texas native trees, perennials, and spread wildflower seeds. All are welcome for this life-changing adventure!

Texas Arbor Day at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Celebrate Texas Arbor Day this year with free admission into the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center all day from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM! Join us for a day filled with fun, educational walks and family-friendly activities throughout our Center where explorers of all ages can learn, explore and play all day. Don't miss out on learning all about Texas trees from knowledgeable Center staff as well as organizations such as the Xerces Society Austin Chapter, Austin Beautiful Trees, Travis Audubon Society and many more!

Fall Fest at Odom Elementary

This event is reserved for Odom Elementary students and families and not open to the general public. Join the Odom Elementary School community for our book fair and movie night! Support our school library by shopping the book fair from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM, after which we will be watching a movie from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM and celebrating Día de los Muertos with friends and family at our community ofrenda. Bring a lawn chair or blankets to get comfy at show time! Friends and family will have a chance to get some transplants for their gardens or add to our pollinator beds and habitats around the school.

Roots & Wings Festival Day with Parents as Teachers

This event is reserved for Leander ISD students and families and not open to the general public. Invite pollinators to your front porch! Leander ISD’s Parents as Teachers invites you to engage in activities about our winged and rooted friends, fly like butterflies and leaves, and read books about trees and butterflies. You will leave with your own mini butterfly gardens and lots of knowledge about trees and butterflies!

Tuesday Twilights: Monarch Appreciation Night

Join us for an evening of monarch appreciation, music, food, and community during our seasonal evening event, Tuesday Twilights. During this evening from 5 to 8 PM guests can enjoy a variety of monarch themed activities and exploration for all ages. Learn all about monarchs and the plants they love from knowledgeable Center staff as well as organizations such as the Xerces Society Austin Chapter and many more!

Celebration Migration: A Morning for the Monarchs

Fluorescent Forest with the Central Texas Mycological Society

Preregistration is required for this event. Join Central Texas Mycology for a family-friendly celebration of the forest at night as part of this Roots & Wings Festival event. We will explore the diverse, nocturnal ecosystem of Circle Acres with UV flashlights to look for night pollinators, glowing plants, fungus, lichens and more!

Roots & Wings Festival Celebration at Zilker Botanical Garden

Visit the Zilker Botanical Garden for a Roots & Wings-themed day of pollinator- and tree-themed activities! This sitewide event will be a combined celebration of Monarch Appreciation Day and Arbor Day here at the Zilker Botanical Garden. Walk through a butterfly tent with live butterflies, tag a monarch butterfly to support scientific research, witness a butterfly release, visit our hummingbird garden to learn about hummingbird feeder care and planting native hummingbird attracting plants, learn about how to make a bat house or solitary bee habitat in your yard, dissect a dead log to learn about the value of trees in forests, and so much more!

The caterpillars are coming! The caterpillars are coming! Come back throughout the Festival and visit Windsor Park Branch Library's caterpillars in their various stages of transformation. Maybe you'll be around when a brand new butterfly is ready to take flight!

Butterfly Habitat Building Demonstration at the Windsor Park Branch Library

The caterpillars are coming! The caterpillars are coming! Come build a place for them to eat and eat and eat before finally settling into their chrysalises for a most amazing metamorphosis. The habitats we build will be perfect for getting real close and observing what happens along the way from very hungry caterpillars to glorious monarch butterflies. Come back throughout the Festival and visit Windsor Park Branch Library's caterpillars in their various stages of transformation. Maybe you'll be around when a brand new butterfly is ready to take flight!

Pollinator Protection w/PEAS!

This event is reserved for students and not open to the general public. PEAS will help schools cultivate and revitalize their pollinator gardens by purchasing pollinator plants for schools who "opt-in" to accepting a delivery from us and can ensure they will get planted. In some schools, we will be able to lead the plantings with our students during their programming times. Through our school programming, we will be able to share about the importance of pollinator plants and basic care instructions with the teachers and students.

Pollinator Garden Planting with Pease Park Conservancy

Pre-registration is required for this event. Bring your family and friends for a day of planting native Austin wildflowers! Join Pease Park Conservancy in creating pollinator gardens to improve soil health, prevent erosion, improve water quality, and, more importantly, provide food for insects like bees and butterflies to protect our ecosystem.

Make seed balls, help plant a Monarch Waystation, adopt a free sapling from TreeFolks, enjoy nature play with PARD's loose-parts kits, learn about butterflies and trees with Project Learning Tree, talk to Park Rangers, take a garden tour, storytime, crafts and more! Nature costumes encouraged!

Come learn about the pollinators who visit our beautiful neighborhood meadow and the types of habitats and foods the meadow provides! We will celebrate these important creatures with butterfly themed activities, art, and music! Snacks, coffee, and beverages will be provided!

Roots & Wings Festival Day at Patterson Park

Patterson Park community garden invites the community to a Saturday morning full of activities and live music! We will have a Fall plant giveaway with native flowers and vegetables to support our pollinators before they hibernate for the Fall. The first 100 people will get free ice cream from a local vendor! We will have booths set up to learn about backyard honey beekeeping, the Austin Butterfly Forum, and the Austin purple martin group.

Monarch Butterflies Exhibit at the North Village Branch Library

Come see how it all begins! We plan to have milkweed plants/cuttings with eggs on the leaves in a safe enclosure. Throughout the Festival (10/22-11/5), we hope that caterpillars, then chrysalises will appear. When the adult Monarch butterflies mature, they will be set free just outside of the library!

Pre-registration is required for this event. Join The Trail Conservancy at Volma Overton Sr. Beach in spreading native wildflower seeds! TTC staff will train and educate volunteers on seeding techniques, the importance of pollinators, and the overall stewardship of the Hike-and-Bike Trail. All tools, gloves, and materials will be provided.

Bioblitz and Guided Walks at Blair Woods with Travis Audubon

Pre-registration is required for this event. Travis Audubon will host an all-day Bioblitz to celebrate the biodiversity at Blair Woods. Come explore our east Austin preserve and learn about your local flora and fauna. We will have hour-long walks led by knowledgeable volunteers that focus on different groups of organisms, like trees and plants, insects, birds, and fungi.

Pollinator Planting at Anderson High School

Join the Anderson High School community and Anderson PTSA as we create a pollinator-friendly entrance to our campus! We will be planting native flowering perennials, as well as cleaning up invasive species, and creating a welcoming environment for the community, students, staff, and pollinators.

Visit the Zilker Botanical Garden for a Roots & Wings-themed author lunchtime lecture! Sara Dykman, author of “Bicycling with Butterflies,” will be be discussing her book. Learn monarchs, ask Sara questions about her writing process, and discover the importance of habitats for butterflies and other migrating pollinators.
